Horse Guards Parade

Horse Guards Parade is a large parade ground off Whitehall in central London. It is the site of the annual ceremonies of Trooping the Colour, which commemorates the monarch's official birthday, and Beating Retreat.
Horse Guards Parade was formerly the site of the Palace of Whitehall's tiltyard, where tournaments (including jousting) were held in the time of Henry VIII. It was also the scene of annual celebrations of the birthday of Queen Elizabeth.
Horse Guards Parade will host the beach volleyball competition of the 2012 Summer Olympics held in London. Temporary courts and seating will be installed, much as seating is installed annually for Trooping the Colour. There will be one court with a capacity of 15,000 with two tiers and four floodlight towers at each of its corners, two practice courts to the east of the arena, and a further six practice courts at St. James's Park.

 Beach Volleyball debuted as an exhibition game in 1992 Olympic. Olympic Beach Volleyball will be contested from Saturday 28th July to Thursday 9th August during 2012 Olympic London.

Inventor of beach volleyball.

William G. Morgan was born in 1870.
He was the inventor of volleyball, originally called "Mintonette".
He was born in Lockport, New York, USA.
He met James Naismith, inventor of basketball, while Morgan was studying at Springfield College, Massachusetts in 1892
. Like Naismith, Morgan pursued a career in Physical Education at the YMCA (YMCA stands for Young Men's Christian Association).
Influenced by Naismith and basketball, in 1895, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Morgan invented "Mintonette" a less vigorous team sport more suitable for older members of the YMCA but one that still required athletic skill. Later Alfred S. Halstead watched Mintonnette and re-named it "Volleyball" as the point of the game is to "volley" the "ball" back and forth over the net.
Morgan died in 1942. An elementary school in Holyoke, William Morgan School, bears his name.
Beach Volleyball or Sand Volleyball is similar to Indoor Volleyball. Beach Volleyball evolved in Hawaii in 1915. Beach Volleyball is governed by Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) organization. Beach Volleyball debuted as an exhibition game in 1992 Olympic. Olympic Beach Volleyball will be contested from Saturday 28th July to Thursday 9th August during 2012 Olympic London.

Olympic Beach Volleyball - The first tournament in Europe

Beach volleyball began to appear in Europe in the 1930s. By the 1940s, doubles tournaments were being played on the beaches of Santa Monica for trophies. In 1948 the first tournament to offer a prize is held in Los Angeles, California. It awards the best teams with a case of Pepsi. In the 1960s, an attempt to start a professional volleyball league was made in Santa Monica. It failed, but a professional tournament was held in France  for 30,000 French francs. The first Manhattan Beach Open was held in 1960. The tournament is now considered the "Wimbledon of Beach Volleyball".  In 1974, the San Diego Open had its first commercial sponsor, Winston Cigarettes, with a prize of $1,500.

Beach volleyball is fundamentally similar to indoor volleyball: a team scores points by grounding the ball on the opponents' court, or when the opposing team commits a fault consecutive contacts must be made by different players.
The major differences between beach and indoor volleyball are:

    * Playing surface
    * Team size
    * Scoring system
    * Overhead touches and tips
    * Block counts as a team touch
    * Coaching is not allowed.

Olympic Beach Volleyball - Federation Internationale de Volleyball

Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) is the international governing body for the sport of volleyball and Beach Volleyball. Its headquarters are located in Lausanne, Switzerland. The FIVB was founded in Paris, France in 1947. In the late 1940s, some of the European national federations began to address the issue of creating an international governing body for the sport of volleyball. Initial discussions eventually lead to the installation of a Constitutive Congress in 1947. Fourteen national federations representing five different continents attended the meetings where, between April 18 and 20, the entity was officially formed, having Frenchman Mr. Paul Libaud as first president.

Olympic Beach Volleyball - Origin and Overview

Olympic Beach Volleyball is a game that is played on sand. The court is divided into two halves with a net extended at a certain height across the middle of the court. Team players have positions that they play and using a ball designed for the Olympic volleyball game, the two teams score points by “grounding” the ball on the opposing side of the net. To win a set a team must reach twenty-five points, and to win an Olympic volleyball beach game or tournament a team must win three sets total. When volleyball is essentially played on the beach the ball used for game play is different than that used in an indoor volleyball game. The ball is usually softer and easier to handle, whereas those volleyball games played indoors use a different style altogether. Olympic beach volleyball first began as an exhibition game in 1992, during the Barcelona Olympics. Since those times the tournaments have been an active part of the Olympics for several different countries.

Olympic Beach Volleyball - Beach Volleyball Overview

Beach volleyball, or sand volleyball, is an Olympic team sport played by two teams of two players on a sand court divided by a net. Beach Volleyball came of age on the sun-soaked beaches of Santa Monica, California, during the 1920s. Like volleyball, the object of the game is to send the ball over the net in order to ground it on the opponent’s court, and to prevent the same effort by the opponent. The event now regarded as the first Beach Volleyball World Championships was held in the state in 1976, and was even won by a pair of Californians (Greg Lee and Jim Menges). However, over the last three decades, the sport has moved far beyond its West Coast roots and is now played all over the world.

Olympic Beach Volleyball - Beach Volleyball History

Beach volleyball was probably first played in Hawaii in 1915, when the Outrigger Beach and Canoe Club set up a court on Waikiki Beach but most people believe that it begun in Santa Monica, California, in the 1920s, about 25 years after the indoor version of the game was invented on the other side of the USA in Massachusetts. The sport began as a form of family fun at the beach and its wide appeal and low-cost meant it soon spread around the world.
